Trump tramples America’s relations, but is he, ironically, saving Planet Earth?

Many Americans have reacted harshly towards President Trump’s recent decision to withdraw America from the Paris Agreement. They feel that it is his worst choice yet. They feel that he is abandoning years of hard work and negotiation. In some ways, they are correct; Trump’s bold judgement will prevent America from upholding its progressive and powerful reputation in foreign relations.

194 of 197 of the world’s countries, including North Korea, are current signatories of the treaty. Why would Trump wish to be a minority along with Syria and Nicaragua—two powerless nations? When pondering why such an irrational decision was made, a theme crossed my mind: recognition, power, and leadership. Throughout his campaign and presidency thus far, Trump has proved that he craves attention and dominance. By leaving the Paris Agreement, most-likely, he wished for attention and thought other nations would follow America because, historically, it has had an immense amount of influence in the world. He wished to spark followers and a massive change, amassing power. Though, his choice is doing the exact opposite. Various nations have spoken against the president and increased their advocacy for climate change. Therefore, his choice will, in fact, reinforce and solidify the accord. It will bring the 194 member nations together.

In addition to many countries, many corporations have opposed Trump’s choice. He shook businesses around the world, and, finally, they are reacting to climate change. They are recognizing that they must make the changes they wish to see because Trump—a proxy leader in today’s world—cannot. For example, a myriad of companies such as Exxon Mobil, Tesla, JP Morgan, Walt Disney Company, Bank of America, and Campbell Soup have manifested that they wish to remain in the accord for international business purposes and, of course, to save our planet. To take action, many corporations will implement efforts, such as reducing their gas emissions. Considering the strong opposition to Trump’s decision and recognition for change, in some ways, Trump’s abandonment of the Paris Agreement will accelerate environmental protection. In some ways, Trump is saving the world’s environment.
